"You snooze you lose" - my Mom

Marisa Schaffer

Thank you so much for taking the time to read a little about what I am doing and why this summer and fall. I am participating in, and training for, a three-day 200 mile bike ride come October.

Why the heck am I doing this?

For some time, I have been looking for an outlet outside the work day in which my efforts and time is spent towards a cause a little greater than managing my “9 to 5.” I have aspirations that this journey will encourage others (and myself) to pay a little more attention to their health, to their well-being, to go and regularly check in with their doctors, to gain a better understanding of their family’s health history, to learn and apply preventive measures, hug others, and smile more.

This ride specifically supports the Young Survival Coalition (YSC) in effort to raise awareness and education on breast cancer. This cause is close to my heart. At this point in my life, like most others, our strength, courage, and faith has been tested in the face of disease. During these times of emotional stress, feeling scared and vernerable, I recall constantly thinking of ways to lessen the pain, the burden, and the darkness of it all. In what ways could the process of treatment make others feel more hopeful, evoke positivity, and offer comfort?

While I realize I can’t tackle or solve this problem single-handedly, I am optimistic this ride and cause contributes in some small way to getting there. At the very least, I hope I am able to remind my family, my friends, and myself how important physical, mental, and spiritual health is.

Let’s take care of us. I think WE are our greatest gift to each other. If I, and we, can help it...why don’t we?!

“Prevention is better than cure” (Desiderius Erasmus – a very smart humanitarian from the Renaissance).

Thank you for reading! Below are some details provided by the YSC. Your generosity and support is beyond heart warming:

Tour de Pink is a chance to honor survivors, raise awareness and support important programs for those affected by breast cancer.

How will your donation help?

$25 could fund YSC materials at three healthcare providers’ offices.
$100 could provide a Newly Diagnosed Navigator to six women when they need it most.
$250 could allow us to train four survivors to serve as a peer supporters.
$500 could fund a Young Empowered Survivor (YES) educational program.
$1,200 could pay for two young women to travel to the YSC Summit, an annual conference for young women affected by breast cancer and their co-survivors.
