Welcome to Patti Green's Page

Patti Green

This year I am excited to have made a challenging commitment to participate in YSC Tour de Pink; a three-day, 200 mile bike ride for breast cancer. I ride for all of the young women with breast cancer and all that will be diagnosed. I ride so they will not feel alone. I ride so they will know of all of the resources that are out there to help them. With your help, encouragement, and supporting donation, I know I can do it!

May 4, 2016 is a day I'll never forget... I found out I had breast cancer. Rather than sipping margaritas on Cinco de Mayo, I was instead trying my best to process the news, meet with a surgeon to understand the diagnosis, and figure out next steps. Needless to say, it was a very overwhelming, confusing, and scary time in my life. I was 38 years old. I had no family history of this disease. I was healthy and exercised regularly. I had breast cancer.

I am blessed to have a wonderful support system of family and friends and forever grateful for all they did to help me over the past year. I had the added benefit of meeting other young breast cancer survivors.

A high school friend, and breast cancer survivor, introduced me to a support group in northern NJ with other young women who are breast cancer survivors through the Young Survival Coalition. It was invaluable to talk to these young women. Being diagnosed at a young age can be isolating. Waiting rooms and treatment rooms are often filled with women 30+ years older than me. We are at very different times in our lives and don’t have much in common. By meeting with young women, we are able to talk about our experiences, surgical options, treatments, what helps, and just “share” common experience. So often, we don’t want to “complain” to our friends and family and may particularly not want to talk about some of our more embarrassing side effects with them. The support group is a safe haven of sorts… we’re all going through the same thing!

I moved down the Jersey Shore days after diagnosis (Did I mention the fun part where I found out two days before my home closing?!?...). Due to healing from surgery and the harsh side effects of chemotherapy, I wasn’t able to make it to the support group meetings in North Jersey, as they were an hour away. I looked for a local group for young women in my area and there wasn’t one. So, I started a group in my new neighborhood by reaching out to the Young Survival Coalition and a local Cancer Support Community. It is my turn to pay it forward and help others the way the group in Northern NJ helped me!!! I’m filled with resolve and sadness over having met so many young women who have been diagnosed this past year. Every year 12,000 young women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Your donation will go to support Young Survival Coalition and ensure that no young woman faces breast cancer alone. YSC is the premier organization providing supportive services and education resources for young women affected by breast cancer.

YSC Tour de Pink is much more than just a bike ride, it’s a chance to honor survivors, raise awareness and support important programs for young women affected by breast cancer. I hope I can count on you to help me reach my fundraising goal!

How will your donation help?
$25 could fund YSC materials at three healthcare providers’ offices.
$100 could provide a Newly Diagnosed Navigator to six women when they need it most.
$250 could allow us to train four survivors to serve as a peer supporters.
$500 could fund a Young Empowered Survivor (YES) educational program.
$1,200 could pay for two young women to travel to the YSC Summit, an annual conference for young women affected by breast cancer and their co-survivors.

Any amount helps!

Thank you in advance for your support. I truly appreciate your generosity.
